Maine Senate District 13 candidate Laura Fortman’s campaign to expand access to education, health care and economic opportunity for the people of Maine has received the official backing of former President Barack Obama.
“I am very grateful that President Obama has recognized the importance and purpose of our campaign to bring solutions to Augusta and improve the lives of the people of Maine,” said Fortman. “It is an honor that the President, once a state legislator himself, has recognized that I have the right experience and leadership skills to work with people from all backgrounds and ideologies to deliver affordable health care, expand support for higher education and technical training, reduce burdensome property taxes, and build a 21st century economy that helps all businesses and workers, from our farmers and fishermen to our downtown merchants and everyone in between.”
As head of the Maine Women’s Lobby, as Maine Commissioner of Labor, and as Deputy Director of the federal Wage and Hour Division at the U. S. Department of Labor, Fortman has direct experience in building coalitions and improving or creating programs that make government work for all people. President Obama’s endorsement means that Fortman will now be featured on the national Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) list of must-watch races. The DLCC selects key races and strong candidates from across the country to highlight in its Spotlight Races.
“We can build an economy in Maine that is based on a healthy and sustainable environment, that nourishes and sustains our communities, and creates opportunities for investments and better jobs, ” Fortman said. “I’m in this race to stand up and fight for the hard working residents of this district, and to ensure everyone in our state — from our seniors to the newest generation — has a voice in Augusta and a say in the future direction of our state. That’s what fuels my campaign, and I am hopeful that everyone in District 13 will give us their support now and their vote in November, so we can get good things done in Augusta.”
